Hair Transplantation

No Hair, No Life

About Hair Transplantation

Hair transplantation is a technique that moves individual hair follicles from a part of the body called the 'donor site' to bald or balding part of the body known as the 'recipient site'. It is primarily used to treat male pattern baldness. In this minimally invasive procedure, grafts containing hair follicles that are genetically resistant to balding are transplanted to the bald scalp.

Different Methods

Since hair naturally grows in groupings of 1 to 4 hairs, today's most advanced techniques harvest and transplant these naturally occurring 1-4 hair "follicular units" in their natural groupings. Thus modern hair transplantation can achieve a natural appearance by mimicking nature hair for hair. This hair transplant procedure is called Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation. Donor hair can be harvested in two different ways: strip harvesting (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE).

Basic Principles

When "donor" hair from the permanent horseshoe-shaped fringe area on the back and sides of the head was moved to the balding "recipient" area on the top of the scalp, it continued to grow and did not fall out. Donor hair from the fringe area remains insensitive to DHT, and it is this property of donor hair (not local properties in the recipient area) that enables transplanted hair to grow. It is called "donor dominance" and it is the property that makes hair transplantation possible.

Customized Treatment

It is important to point out that this fringe of hair is a limited area that can only produce a finite amount of donor hair. The concept of a limited donor supply is important in hair transplantation as it places a limit on what we can accomplish. It can also be used to restore eyelashes, eyebrows, beard hair, chest hair, pubic hair and to fill in scars caused by accidents or surgery such as face-lifts and previous hair transplants.

Our Technique

One Sitting may change your entire life

We use special microscope with 20-50 times magnified view during every step of graft preparation - during slivering and cutting. So that even the single hair could not be wasted. " You cannot save until you could not see".

We cut the graft to make it candle shaped rather than pear shaped for dense packing. A very thin rim of epidermis is left around the hair to prevent cobble stone appearance at the recipient site.

We use graft counter during cutting and implantation, so that transparency is maintained and we show the patient how many grafts we have implanted.

At Skin Mantraa technicians are involved only in graft preparation and all the steps of technicians are monitored by the doctor through LCD screen attached with microscope.

We use no touch technique during graft cutting. Graft at no time was holded by root area to prevent graft trauma. We hold the follicle by the emergent hair (as during donor area preparation we keep the hair 3mm long).

To make the entire procedure comfortable we use specifically designed silicone pillow and customized OT table with specially designed headrest to avoid neck and back muscle strain.

We make the area numb before injecting the local anesthesia to make the entire procedure painless.

Mega sessions (more than 3,000 grafts in a single day) are discouraged at Skin Mantraa as out of body time for graft will be more, so survival will be less. At Skin Mantraa we don't believe in numbers, we believe in perfection.

To prevent the chances of infection we fumigate the entire OT complex with Virex II solution before the procedure. We use disposable water proof ETO sterilized sheets to prevent the chances of cross infection.

Utmost care is taken to mimic the angle, direction, curl and orientation of existing native hair during implantation. This crucial step is done by doctor only because it affects the final result.

We apply subcuticular suture at donor side after strip removal. So there is no need for stitch removal and visit to the clinic again after 14 days.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is a hair restoration technique where a patient's hair is transplanted in naturally occurring groups of 1 to 4 hair, called follicular units. Follicular units also contain sebaceous (oil) glands, nerves, a small muscle, and occasional fine vellus hair. In Follicular Unit Transplantation these small units are safely transplanted in a single session, which maximizes the cosmetic impact of the procedure.

FUT is considered an advance over older hair transplantation procedures that used larger grafts and often produced a pluggy, unnatural look. In follicular unit transplant, the results will mimic the way hair grows in nature and will be undetectable.

FUT involves the removal of a strip of superficial layers of hair bearing scalp from the back and sides of the head (donor area). After the donor strip is removed, the wound edges are closed to leave a fine, hairline scar. The strip is dissected into fine follicular units with the help of microscopes and are transplanted on to the bald area (recipient area).

The main advantage of this method is to cover wider areas as it gives scope for obtaining more number of grafts in a single session. With microscopic dissection there will be lesser chance of graft wastage (transection).

In general, FUT method is the most preferred method worldwide as it yields more number of grafts which helps to cover wider bald area in a single session. In severe degree of baldness FUT method is more beneficial in terms of results and coverage and also cost and it is least tedious to the patient and to the doctor also, when compared to FUE where one can achieve less number of grafts hence less coverage in single session.

Follicular Unit Extraction(FUE)

In FUE hair transplant procedure, individual follicular unit grafts are harvested one at a time using a tiny punch typically ranging from 0.7 to 1 millimeter in size.

Once the underlying follicular unit is separated from the surrounding tissues it can then be extracted by a forceps gripping the hair above the surface. The small hole left behind after the follicle is extracted then heals over the next few days. This tiny wound contracts as it heals making the resulting round scar smaller and less noticeable. The FUE patient typically ends up with hundreds of small round white scars, which are normally undetectable to the naked eye even when a patient's hair is cropped extremely short.

We do the FUE by Harris S.A.F.E. scribe machine (US FDA approved).

Each follicular unit graft is carefully placed into tiny recipient sites. Like FUT hair transplantation, FUE comes with a unique set of advantages and disadvantages and patients considering follicular unit extraction should become familiar with them.

Advantages

  • Less Invasive Nature
  • Decreased Scarring and Ability to Wear Hair Short or Cropped
  • Faster Healing and Recovery Time and Reduced Post-operative Pain
  • The Ability to "Cherry Pick" Grafts
  • Optimal for Small and Specialized Cases

Disadvantages

  • Decreased Total Yield (from Increased Graft Transection and burial)
  • Thinner, Less Viable Grafts
  • Too Many Extractions May Lead to "Moth Eaten" Appearance
  • A Single FUE Hair Transplant Session May Take Multiple Days
  • Cost is high
  • Grafts Extracted Outside the "Safe Zone". That is hair's that may fall in future.
  • Necessity of Shaving Donor Region
